How VOLTA's dual heating system works

The most common question about VOLTA after the charcoal comparison is a simpler one: how does it actually work? Not in a marketing sense. In a mechanical sense. What is dual-direction heating, what does the battery design have to do with airflow, and what does the app add that the device doesn't already do on its own?

This article goes through the five core features of VOLTA. What each one is, why it was built that way, and what it changes about a session. No filler.

Dual-direction heating

Most hookah heat management devices, including traditional coal setups, apply heat from above the bowl. The tobacco on top gets the most heat first, and the rest gradually catches up as heat spreads down. This creates inconsistency in how the tobacco cooks and often leads to harshness in the first few pulls.

VOLTA's heating system works from the top and surrounding sides of the bowl simultaneously. Both zones fire at the same time. The tobacco starts cooking evenly from the first moment rather than from the top down.

The practical results: first pulls are smoother, the bowl lasts longer without burning out in one spot, and flavor release is more consistent across the session. This is the specific problem dual-direction heating solves.

Swappable battery

The battery on VOLTA is a module, not a built-in cell. It slides in and out of the device in seconds and charges via USB-C whether it's installed in VOLTA or sitting on its own.

The spec: lithium-ion 21700-3S1P, 5000mAh, 10.95V. On a full charge, you get 1.5 to 2 hours of active session time depending on heat setting. A standard session runs around 1.5 hours, so a single charge covers most setups.

The swappable design matters most for consecutive sessions (charged spare = zero downtime) and travel (the whole system is as portable as the battery).

Airflow through the battery module

In VOLTA, the central airflow channel runs through the battery module itself. Not around it. Through it. The draw path goes straight through the battery's core from the bowl down to the hookah stem below.

This keeps the air path and the heating components physically separate. When you pull through the hookah, the air doesn't pass through or near any heating electronics. The draw stays clean.

USB-C pass-through charging

VOLTA can run while it's charging. The USB-C port on the battery module supports simultaneous charging and use.

Charging spec: 5V/5A, 9V/3A, 12V/3A fast charge. A depleted battery charges to full in about an hour. If you connect mid-session, even a short plug-in recovers meaningful runtime. The session doesn't have to end.

OLED display and the optional app

The OLED display shows temperature, session duration, battery level, and your active preset in real time. Everything you need to run a session is visible without touching your phone.

The ShishaX app is optional. It connects over Bluetooth for direct control or WiFi for remote features. The main reason to use it is if you want to build and save custom heat presets.

Run a session, adjust the heat until everything feels right for your specific bowl and tobacco combination, then save those settings as a named preset. The preset syncs to VOLTA and appears on the device. Next session, you load it and start from the same point.
